The Art and Life of Danny Allen

February 2, 2018 - March 18, 2018

The Art and Life of Danny Allen includes three exhibitions of different, but complementary aspects of Danny Allen’s artworks.

About the Artist

Daniel "Danny" Allen was a largely self-taught artist who lived in Rochester, NY in the late 1960's and early 1970's. Allen's work had a profound influence on the regional cultural scene. He was openly gay and was one of the first artists to address this issue in his work. Allen worked in a variety of mediums for his drawings, sketches, paintings, collages, and assemblages. The exhibition at the Mercer Gallery will also include the work of Allen's friends: Kathy Calderwood, Bill Whiting, Juliana Furlong Williams, Eva Weiss, Antonio Petracca, Steven Plunkett, and Ramon Martinez. At the start of the exhibition, Mr. Bill Whiting will give a talk based on his book An Early Work Late in Life - The Life and Art of Danny Allen, which he wrote following the discovery of one of Allen's exquisite surrealist miniatures lost in the archives of the Rochester Memorial Art Gallery. Several other artists will talk about their interactions with Allen during the turbulent artistic counter culture of the late 1960's and early 1970's.
