Shelter is the third and final performance of the Needs series by Longva+Carpenter. One woman sits at a square table, piled high with tiny pea-sized stones. She considers, counts, and drops each one to the ground. A second woman, with an identical table and chair strapped to her back, attempts to drag a huge bag of stones across the length of the gallery. The first and second pieces of Needs were previously performed in the region.
About the Artists
Longva+Carpenter is a collaborative partnership between Norwegian video/performance artist Terese Longva and US performance/installation artist Laurel Jay Carpenter. The pair has been collaborating via blog and video conferencing to develop new works that utilize both the body and time as material in their investigations of personal longings, feminist ideology, and political urgency.
